AZERBAIJAN TO CONTINUE PARTICIPATION IN TACIS REGIONAL PROGRAMS

Azerbaijan will continue participation in all the regional projects on the “Caspian ecological programs” of TACIS, AzerTAj correspondent was told at the Coordination Bureau (CB) of EC technical assistance on Azerbaijan Askar Alakbarov.

Noting the necessity of realization of the TACIS programs for expansion of regional; cooperation, Mr. Alakbarov stated that currently is going on realization of the EC project “Sustainable development of the Caspian communities”, in the frame of which to the coastal region habitants of Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Russia and Turkmenistan will be given small grants in two trenches - in fall 2004 and in spring 2005.

“The 3-year project aims at reduction of poaching in the coastal zones of the Caspian and prevention of illegal catch of sturgeon by creating alternative source of income. On completion of the program activities, impact of the human factor on environment would notably reduce”, head of the CB emphasized.

At his words, contributors of TACIS project will go to the regions and take active part in the activities together with the representatives of local authorities, municipalities and NGOs.

The budget of the regional project totals 1,6 million Euros and the first trench at amount 500 thousand Euros are to be allocated shortly, Mr. Alakbarov stressed.
