USTDA GRANT WILL DEVELOP TOURISM STRATEGY IN AZERBAIJAN

The U.S. Trade and Development Agency (USTDA) awarded a $308,050 grant to the Ministry of Youth, Sport and Tourism of Azerbaijan for the development of a national tourism strategy. The grant was conferred at a signing ceremony at the U.S. Embassy in Baku. U.S. Ambassador to Azerbaijan Reno Harnish and Minister Abulfas Garayev of the Ministry of Youth, Sport and Tourism signed the agreement on behalf of the U.S. and Azerbaijani Governments, respectively.

The Government of Azerbaijan has identified tourism as a priority sector for developing and diversifying its economy. Azerbaijan has a seaside location, as well as mountains and lakes, and possesses numerous cultural attractions, such as medieval architecture, castles, and caravanserais. The USTDA-funded tourism strategy is expected to assist the Government of Azerbaijan in identifying and prioritizing projects for development.

The U.S. Trade and Development Agency advances economic development and U.S. commercial interests in developing and middle-income countries. The agency funds various forms of technical assistance, feasibility studies, training, orientation visits and business workshops that support the development of a modern infrastructure and a fair and open trading environment. USTDA's strategic use of foreign assistance funds to support sound investment policy and decision-making in host countries creates an enabling environment for trade, investment and sustainable economic development. In carrying out its mission, USTDA gives emphasis to economic sectors that may benefit from U.S. exports of goods and services.
