BLAIR VISITS TURKEY

British Prime Minister Tony Blair stayed in Ankara for a one-day working visit at the invitation of the Prime Minister of Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdogan to exchange opinions on the situation in Iraq and Afghanistan, Cyprus problem, Turkey-EU relations, NATO summit expected in June in Istanbul, and a number of regional and international issues.

After the meeting, the premiers made statement to journalists and answered their questions. Mr. Blair stated his country wishes Turkey to join the European Union, and has always confirmed its position. He stressed England had contributed in practice to abolition of economic sanctions against Cyprus Turks, who approved the UN Secretary General’s plan on Cyprus.

Turkish Premier Recep Tayyip Erdogan noted the necessity of mobilization of all peace-loving forces in fighting international terrorism, and stated Turkey is not planning to sent armed forces to Iraq, but to continue to render humanitarian aid to the neighboring country.

Meanwhile, members of several Trade Unions and Public Organizations of Turkey have held protest meetings against the the British Prime Minister's visit.
